What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis has been around for thousands of years, first used by Ancient Egyptians to induce dreams, although the hypnotic state is very different to sleep. In the late 1700s, hypnotherapy had moved away from mysticism and into the scientific realm, hypnosis was associated with the physical use of magnets, the magnetic forces and hypnosis combined were used to treat patient's ailments. By the early 1800s, scientists were able to prove that hypnosis was just as effective without the use of magnets. This showed that a cooperating patient and a hypnotist using hypnotherapeutic techniques were the only things necessary for effective treatment. The practice of hypnotherapy has come full circle, over the years the understanding of hypnosis has changed from a form of medicine to a principle of psychology, used today to treat many conditions.
